Writer's Voice Logo

This logo was created for Francesca Rheannon's great radio show, "Writer's Voice." It's one of the best illustrative concepts I've ever been able to pull off. The pen and microphone are combined with typography to make a logo and wordmark that works with the theme of the show: interviewing writers.

UMass Factbook Web Graphic

This graphic was created for the University of Massachusetts Amherst Factbook, a publication created by the Office of Institutional Research. The image was created to be evocative of a physical book cover (the Factbook is no longer printed.) The design is strong on UMass identity and has details that subtley convey a positive take on statistics that summarize the University. It was created using Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and ImageReady.

Jakob's Well Blog

An organization with very little money needed a website that used a content management system so that users could update the site through a web-portal. I solved their problem by installing Wordpress, using a simple template from Upstart Blogger, and creating a custom logo for group. The logo was created using Illustrator and Photoshop.

UMass Glance Web Graphic

This graphic was created for the UMass at a Glance, a publication created by the Office of Institutional Research. I needed to get across the fact that the document needed was properly printed on 11x17"(tabloid) paper. It was created in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.

UMass Protestant Chaplaincy

This website was created some time ago, but it's still up and my names on it. I've come quite away from using slices and tables. Oh goodness! In fact, I urge you to check out this very website(iancallahan.net): it's standards based and accessible (and I'd like to think it doesn't look half bad, either.)

Troop Distribution

This choropleth map is an exercise in information design with data provided by Tim Kane at the Heritage Foundation. I used Adobe Illustrator, ArcGIS and InDesign to tell a story about worldwide US troop distribution up to Operation Iraqi Freedom. I actually don't agree with the story it tells, by the way, but I wanted to show the power of design in displaying information. It's a rather large file because it uses a very detailed vector map of the world.

Keep Watch

A poster for compline (night prayers) at Grace Episcopal Church in Amherst, Massachusetts. It was created in Photoshop and InDesign, using photographic assets acquired at the church to reflect the atmosphere of the service. The font was chosen to match the typographic quality of The Book of Common Prayer.

Alternative Spring Break

A poster for the Civic Interfaith Alliance's Alternative Spring Break program for 2005. The poster was created in Adobe Illustrator, and it was designed to convey course information and trip destinations in an artful and visually compelling way. It includes custom vector illustrations depicting historical scenes for each of the trip destinations.

Movie Screening

This is a simple, clean flyer for a special free screening of "An Inconvenient Truth", with an obvious emphasis on the fact that the screening was free and "special" (not available on DVD yet.) These design features met the requirements of the client, The Ark Five College Episcopal Center.

"The Artist" Map

This map, while very silly and intentionally pretentious, shows off some of my vector drawings and, hopefully, reveals a little about where I'm coming from. I made it using Illustrator and InDesign.

Education

A110/ElectronicaLab

A summary of my experiences as the instructional designer for A110/ElectronicaLab (A110 is the latest name for the project, but ElectronicaLab, though an old title, is a bit more descriptive.)

Hail Caesar: A Story-Telling Game

I designed these cards as part of an educational game designed to teach high school students about the signs and symbols of the Roman Empire. I made the basic layout in Adobe Illustrator, with the intention of distributing game facilitation (the rules and guidance needed to play) on to the cards themselves. Ben Greene helped produce the more than 30 cards that used public domain assets from a variety of sources. They were printed using standard inkjet printing technology to great effect. The rules for the game are still under development after several beta tests.

Graphic Arts Curriculum

Three projects that use the discipline of graphic design as a context for broader learning. The work of the graphic designer goes way beyond technical skill, and these projects are designed to be open about taking students beyond the essential technical skills.

Words, Pictures and Empowerment

I designed this Keynote presentation for a project developed by myself and Ben Greene. We created a fotonovella project that incorporated on demand printing, cheap digital cameras and the techniques of Photovoice to stir self-confidence and empowerment around the issue of technology implementation by NGOs in developing countries. Our presentation was designed to reflect solid presentation design, with a minimal amount of words and maximum impact in each slide.

Et Cetera

If you're interested in seeing photos and videos that I've taken, please visit my Flickr and Youtube accounts over in the sidebar. The screenshot to the left is from a video I made using Final Cut Pro called "Insert Coin(s)."

Hockney Imitator

There's a decrepit chicken-coup on Stanley Street in Amherst. I took pictures of it and reasssembled them in the style of David Hockney.

Font Experiments

These are experiments in typography and illustration done for an information design course at UMass. Think of the typefaces as bolstering the illustrations visually.
